With the change in seasons approaching it’s the perfect time to start sorting your clothes, organise your closet, and pack away clothes you won’t be needing again for a while.
If you have multiple family closets to sort through, set aside a specific day and time to do each one.
Declutter first
I believe that to successfully organise you first need to declutter. In order to do this effectively I advocate removing all items from the space that you are trying to sort and organize.
This allows you to truly see what items you have in addition to what condition they are in.
Removing all items also enables you to clean the space before placing clothing back onto the shelves and into the drawers. A change in seasons is a great time to do a closet cleanout.
Sorting your clothes
Clear a large area such as the bed or a table to place items as you take everything out of the closet. Grab some baskets, bags or boxes and label them ‘donate’ and ‘throw away’. Whilst you are sorting your clothes, place items you aren’t keeping into the donate or throw-away bags.
Donate clothing that is still in good condition that you no longer wish to keep. Clothing that is stained or beyond repair can be torn up to use as cleaning cloths or thrown out.
HANGER METHOD AND CAPSULE WARDROBE
Whenever Im sorting through my clothes I like to do the hanger method, which simply comprises placing your hangers backwards so that the open end of each hanger is facing you.
As you wear and wash each item, put them back with the hanger facing the correct way. At the end of the season, you will be able to see which clothing items you are wearing and those that you aren’t.
When you are sorting your clothes consider adopting a more minimalist approach and creating a capsule wardrobe. Choose a few key pieces of clothes that you can mix and match. Simply reducing the number of items in your closet can remove a significant amount of stress from your life and make it easier to get ready each day.

Pack clothes away
Once you have finished sorting your clothes, give the closet a good clean, wiping over the shelves, drawers and hanging rails.
Pack away any clothes you know you won’t be wearing in the coming season. For example, if you are heading into the winter months you can pack away your beach wear. If the summer months are approaching pack away heavy winter coats and other winter items.
Simply place these items into drawers lower down, or on higher shelves as you may not need to access them. Alternatively, you can pack them into storage containers under the bed or in another closet.
Organise your clothes
Wash any clothes that need freshening up before wearing them again. Place the rest of your clothes back into the closet.
I like to organise my clothes by style and colour. For example, I hang all tops or all dresses together grouping them by colour. Place folded items together as well. A drawer for shorts or a drawer for nightwear, a shelf for knitted jumpers and so on. Grouping like items together makes finding what you are looking for easier.
Now that you are done sorting your clothes for the approaching change in season, you will have everything ready at your fingertips as the weather begins to change.
