We start and end our day in the bedroom, so why not create an inviting bedroom sanctuary where you can unwind and relax.
What statement does your bedroom make?
Does it look like you’ve just checked into a spa retreat on a tropical island or more like someone has just ransacked your room?
My bedroom is my own sanctuary to escape to at the end of a long day. I love nothing more than to snuggle up in soft sheets and let the stress of the day melt away. There are some simple and easy things you can do to make your bedroom a more relaxing space and create an inviting bedroom sanctuary where you can get some rejuvenating rest.
The bed is the focal point of the room and creates the biggest impact, so it makes sense to start here.
One of the best habits to form is making the bed each day. This will immediately bring a feeling of tidiness to the room. A beautifully styled bed will invite you into the room to unwind and relax.
Creating a comfortable bed…
I like to start with the bed itself. Does it need a valance? The valance wraps around the lower base of an ensemble bed. I highly recommend you use one as they give the bed a refined and stylish look. Although if you have a newer ensemble your bed may feature a manufactured linen base. In this case adding a valance may not be necessary.
Adding a mattress topper can add an extra layer of comfort to your bed. They can also extend the life of your mattress by protecting it from direct wear and tear. A mattress topper is placed directly over your existing mattress.
A mattress protector is a good idea to shield your mattress from dust mites, dirt, sweat and bacteria. They are also beneficial to asthma and allergy sufferers, as they can be washed, therefore reducing the build up of dust mites and other allergens.
Choosing good quality linens…
Choosing good quality sheets will go a long way towards a restful nights sleep. There are different options to choose from when it comes to sheets. Egyptian cotton, bamboo and silk to name a few. Percale sheets will give a lovely crisp finish, are durable and are less likely to pill over time. Cotton Sateen sheets are soft and silky and Flannelette sheets provide extra warmth in cooler months. Look for fitted sheets that have a larger wall depth, especially if you have a pillow top mattress or you are using a mattress topper.
During the cooler months a blanket can be added on top of the sheets. Choose a generously sized blanket to allow you to tuck it into your mattress.
There are many quilts to choose from depending on the level of warmth and softness you desire. Lightweight cotton quilts are great for the warmer months. I tend to use this type year round as they are adequate for the Queensland climate.
When choosing a quilt and quilt cover, I like to go one size up from my bed size. Queen for a double bed and Super King for a King bed. Some pillow top mattresses have wall depths up to 60cm. Going a size up gives better coverage and will provide the extra hang required to cover the sides of your mattress. It also means there is plenty of quilt for you and your partner to share at night.
Making your bed as comfortable as possible will help to create an inviting bedroom sanctuary where you can rest peacefully and get the sleep you need to be energised for the next day.
Styling your bed…
Make your bed a statement piece with a stylish quilt cover or coverlet. There are a diverse range of quilt covers on the market to suit the style and decor of any home. Complete the look with coordinating cushions and throws.
Use cushions in different colours and textures. I suggest sticking to less than 6 cushions. Also have a place to put them at night rather than on the floor, such as a chair or blanket box.
A throw creates a more casual look, draped across the foot of the bed.
Anchor your beds position in the room by adding a headboard. This will not only make your bed look more stylish but is also a way of adding a personal touch to your bedroom. A soft linen headboard can provide extra comfort when sitting up in bed than a bare wall. Some headboards also provide shelves for books and built in reading lights.
Another addition not to be overlooked, is to place a bedroom bench, ottoman or blanket box at the foot of the bed. They not only add a finishing touch but can also serve as somewhere to sit, extra storage for blankets and cushions or a place to lay your robe ready for the morning.
Extra touches to create an inviting bedroom sanctuary…
Now that you have created a comfortable and beautifully styled bed in which to relax. You can add a few extra touches to the room to enhance the overall feel. This will help you to create an inviting bedroom sanctuary that is your own beautiful tranquil space.
- Keep the bedroom clear of clutter and surfaces clean and free of any excess.
- Invest in light blocking window coverings to ensure you get some much needed rest.
- Create a vignette on a bedside table or dresser of pieces you love and bring you joy to look at.
- If you have enough space consider a reading nook with a comfortable armchair to curl up in with a good book or your favourite magazine.
- Use soft colours and calming neutrals in the bedroom to aid relaxation and rest.
- Set the mood with soft bedside lighting to help you unwind and promote sleep.
- Using essential oils or a diffuser with soothing lavender can help you to fall asleep faster.
- Add a vase of flowers for a touch of beauty or a small potted plant to help purify the air.
Eliminate electronics from the bedroom. Using devises within the hour preceding bedtime can adversely affect your sleep. Not only do they make it more difficult to fall asleep, they also reduce REM sleep and compromise alertness the next morning.
