Spring is when our gardens start to come back to life and awaken after the cold conditions of winter. This is a great time to freshen up the gardens and give your plants an extra boost for the growing season. Here are some spring gardening tips to do around your place this weekend.
Spring Gardening Tips
- Revitalise the soil. It’s likely the soil has become dry and compacted over the winter. Grab a fork or spade and turn the soil over to loosen any compacted materials. Adding Gypsum is beneficial for improving soil structure of heavy clay soils. Wetting agents can aid water absorption. Sandy soils can become water repellent and limit moisture absorption.
- After loosening the soil, dig through some organic matter such as Mushroom Compost, Blood and Bone or Dynamic Lifter to add some nutrients back into the soil to feed the plants during the growing season.
- Mulch the garden. Apply a good covering of organic mulch such as Sugar Cane Mulch or Hay to preserve moisture and keep the soil cool during the heat of summer. Mulching the garden also limits weeds that compete with your plants for nutrients and moisture.
- Fertilise plants with a liquid fertiliser for a quick boost. Seasol is made from seaweed and can help plants to cope with heat stress, stimulate root growth and promote flowering. PowerFeed will fertilise plants while improving soil structure. I have used both these products in my garden for many years.
- Check your plants for pests and disease. Treat affected plants and dispose of any diseased plant material in the bin to stop it spreading through the garden.
- Give your plants a trim and also remove any dead branches. Don’t forget to dig out the weeds too.
- Finally, spring is a great time for planting. Plants will have time to become established in the garden before the harsh summer heat hits.
Springtime is a wonderful time of year to get out into the garden and enjoy the outdoors before the heat of summer. Spend some time refreshing your garden now and it should look great during the months to come.
